CyberSchool
Edmonds, WA

A “virtual school,” CyberSchool serves pupils with needs not met in traditional classrooms. Principal Sonny Magaña seeks new technologies to enhance a “constructivist” approach built on open-ended, project-based activities that gradually increase knowledge. While education is home-based, students and their parents attend five hours of on-site classes each week and spend at least 20 hours weekly in off-site activities.
Beyond lectures and textbooks. “Standard” teaching methods don’t work well for the school’s highly visual learners. These students are very creative thinkers, Magaña relates. “They love graphs, charting and Excel spreadsheets.” They also respond to music, creative writing, art and other visually appealing activities. Getting organized is critical. CyberSchool uses eBeam to reinforce organizing techniques built on Inspiration, such as mindmaps, flow charts and visual symbols. eBeam captures all documents created on whiteboards and saves them on a computer for later review and publishing.
Extending the classroom experience. eBeam enables faculty and students to leverage the limited hours spent on campus. Retrieval of whiteboard notes augments email, instant messaging and chatrooms that extend personal interaction. It also helps students keep up with the highly visual and creative approaches to their class projects.
